The Planetarium that is envisioned for the Arboretum complex is a state-of-the-art, full-dome digital theater that projects a screen around and above the viewers. Modern planetarium systems enable presenters to navigate through 2D and 3D worlds with the aid of software that can render scientific databases, such as the surveys of the Martian planetary surface and NOAA’s weather updates, into images.
As a computer-based classroom and visualization lab, the Planetarium will provide students from every academic department – from chemistry, civil engineering, and geological sciences to art, art history, design, and architecture – the opportunity to study their subjects in an immersive learning environment. When not being used for presentations, this space may be converted into a large hall for gatherings. The planetarium will have a 50-foot dome and seat an audience of 125.
