Dr. Steiner is a professor of Forest Biology in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management. He chaired the effort to create an arboretum and botanic garden at Penn State beginning in 1995 and was appointed director shortly after the master plan was approved by the Board of Trustees in 1999. He is the author of more than 170 scientific and technical publications and is active nationally in forestry education issues. He serves on the boards of the Society of American Foresters and The American Chestnut Foundation.

Ms. Edelson earned a bachelor of arts degree in Philosophy, Psychology, and Cognitive Science at Goucher College, and a master of science degree in Public Horticulture at the University of Delaware and Longwood Gardens. She has worked with several public gardens and community greening organizations, including Reeves-Reed Arboretum, the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College, and the Delaware Center for Horticulture, the Parks & People Foundation, and Cylburn Arboretum. Her responsibilities include the development and care of the Arboretum’s plant collections, oversight of new garden planning and construction, coordination of the internship programs, and facilitation of public education and outreach efforts.

Linda M. Duerr

Ms. Duerr has a bachelor of science degree from Penn State in Education with an emphasis in early childhood and a master of science degree from Penn State in Curriculum and Instruction, Language and Literacy, with an emphasis in children’s literature.

She has held positions in administration, teaching, and adult education, primarily within the early learning programs at Penn State (University Park). Most recently she was director of education at the Child Care Center at Hort Woods where she was a member of the design and program team for that Platinum LEED-certified building.

Ms. Duerr joined the Arboretum staff in August 2013 as the coordinator of children’s educational programs. She adds the perspective of an educator to our team as we begin the work of developing the programs for our Childhood’s Gate Children’s Garden which opened on July 7, 2014.

Ms. Zhou earned a bachelor of arts degree in English for scientific purposes, and a master of arts degree in Applied Linguistics at Southeast University in China. She holds a master of engineering degree in Computer Engineering from Penn State. She worked as an instructor at Southeast University and Penn State before she worked as a business information specialist in a consulting firm.

She joined the Arboretum staff in March 2016 as the financial assistant. Her responsibilities include monitoring income and expenditures, preparing budget reports, reconciling expenditures, tracking expenses for special events, purchasing, processing invoices, accepting and posting payments, processing interdepartmental transactions, and assisting with event-related tasks.

Mr. Toolan is a recent graduate of Kutztown University with a bachelor of science degree in environmental science/biology. During his undergraduate career, he participated in a number of research projects in the fields of entomology and plant pathology and now hopes to earn a master’s degree at Penn State. His responsibilities at the Arboretum include planning, coordinating, documenting, and executing targeted restoration and maintenance efforts on the Marilyn Quigley Gerhold Wildflower Trail and surrounding areas within Hartley Wood.

Mr. Williams holds a bachelor of science degree in Parks and Recreation/Leisure Studies from Penn State. In his previous position as associate director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, he worked to build corporate relationships between Penn State and Fortune 500 companies through research, recruiting, sponsorships, and philanthropy. Hired in January 2008 as the Arboretum’s director of development, Mr. Williams coordinates and manages fund-raising efforts.

Ms. Reeder holds a bachelor of arts degree in Liberal Arts (English) from Mansfield State College and a master of arts degree in Liberal Arts (English) from Penn State. She has previously held positions in program development and administrative planning with the Central Pennsylvania Workforce Development Corporation and the Mid-State Employment and Training Consortium.

As event coordinator, she is responsible for collaborating with other staff to develop and host special Arboretum events and for renting spaces in the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens to the University and public for such activities as academic receptions, reunions, and weddings. Her duties as marketing coordinator for the Arboretum include developing promotional materials, maintaining the website, creating marketing strategies, coordinating public relations, assisting with fund-raising activities, and preparing grant applications.

Ms. Barton earned a bachelor of science degree from Penn State in Forest Science with an emphasis in urban forestry. She previously held positions as a public garden management intern and curatorial assistant at the Arboretum. Her responsibilities include overseeing the use of the plant records system, accessioning and mapping the plant collections, labeling, developing plant records and mapping standards and procedures, coordinating staff for annual events, and providing support for horticultural projects.
