We are deeply grateful for the generosity of Charles H. “Skip” Smith, whose vision and commitment forever changed the landscape of Penn State and made The Arboretum at Penn State a reality.
Skip’s pioneering $10 million gift transformed the idea of an arboretum into the beautiful gardens and natural lands that you see today. Thanks to his generosity, the first phase of the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens opened to the public in 2009, which created a place of beauty and renewal, a venue for the arts, and a pathway to discovery and enrichment.
Almost 20 years later, Skip’s vision still continues to grow. Before his passing in December 2024, he made a final, extraordinary commitment through his estate, $25 million to help ensure the Arboretum blossoms for years to come. His belief in this space, and in what it means to our community, continues to be the north star guiding our growth and mission every day.
Skip understood that the Arboretum wasn’t only about a beautiful garden; it was about the ways people deeply connect to natural spaces. For countless students who learn here, families who create memories together, and visitors who find peace and tranquility in corners of the gardens, his generosity helped create a living classroom, a community space, and a place for those who seek a deeper connection to nature, just steps away from a bustling campus and downtown.
We are immeasurably thankful to Skip and the entire Smith family for their support and continued belief in the inherent value and purpose of the Arboretum. Their legacy reminds us why we do what we do every day. Thank you!
