The Arboretum at Penn State

Mitchell Tract Master Plan

botanicgardenssiteThe Arboretum at Penn State is a 370-acre tract fronting on Park Avenue and stretching back to the north into Big Hollow and out to I-99. This master planning document concerns only the Mitchell Tract, a 58-acre parcel on Park Avenue that serves as the front door to the Arboretum. It has always been the intent from previous master planning to concentrate the intensive displays and educational facilities of the Arboretum in this location and to devote the remaining acres to managed natural plant communities, and research. This plan studies the Mitchell Tract in detail and plans the facilities that will create not only a vibrant educational center devoted to plants and to man’s relationship to them, but also a first-class amenity contributing to the quality of life on the campus and in the community and enhancing the image of the University.
